AGM Meeting Completed - Posted on March 10th, 2008

The SSBM AGM for 2008 has been completed. The meeting commenced with Jason Leblanc giving a presentation to the club about Smallmouth Bass, the presentation included a report of their recent nesting studies, future projects, as well as an explanation to the new angling regulations for 2008 in regards to bass tournaments. The club would like once again to thank Jason for his presentation, it was very informative.

Following that we drew the raffle tickets, 3rd place and 75 dollars went to Bill Sarty, 2nd Rob Weagle, with 125 dollars. Free entry fees for 2008 was won by Vincent Connolly, congratulations Vincent. We then confirmed the old minutes, and went past old business rather quickly. New business discussed a few important topics. One, their is proposed national regulations for boat speed limits within 30m of the shore. This regulation is rumored to commence sometime over the summer. The discussion was made that SSBM needs to strictly abide by these rules if they do in fact go into place as it will affect the image of the club.

There was then a discussion about Mushamush and it was agreed that the club would supply $250 dollars to the appropriate parties for road improvements. There was then a lengthly discussion about the possibility of a new launch at PonHook Lake. The club agreed to fund the launch for the new area as long as they were provided with access, an open area, and parking. Note is to be made here that if this does indeed go through, the club will be looking for funding from both the government and other organizations that would look to use the launch there. This investigation is being headed by Jeff Ingram.

There were a minor discussions about a few things. The club hopes to get new weigh bags in soon, when they are in and looked at by the executive, we will order more and hope to have 8 for tournament season. However, we will only have 5 or 6 bags in circulation during the tournaments. The new rule implemented at the last meeting states that teams cannot weigh fish if they are not in an SSBM bag. They may place their own bag in an SSBM bag, but they must have an SSBM bag or the fish will not be weighed. This is to reduce stress on the fish. We will also have a more organized and distinct bag line and weigh line. We hope to have these areas designated at the tournaments. This will minimize confusion on where the lineups are and ables better viewing of the weigh-in. In addition, there is a new rule in place at the mersey river tournaments. At the top of the river system where the big boulders lie just beneath the surface, this will be an idle zone only. The club hopes to have this area bouyed, it was discussed that this area is dangerous on plane for both the boater and surrounding boats.

There was then the election of the 2008 executive. Gary Smith, Rob Sarty, Kevin Corkum, and Cody Lohnes all kept their respective positions. Mike Myra has stepped down from the presidents position to Social Director. The 2008 SSBM president is a former president, Mark Weare. The club seemed more than happy with the 2008 executive. A note here also is that Tremayne Nauss accepted the weighmaster duties again for SSBM, a thanks goes to Tremayne for that. The new executive hopes to have all major sponsors for tournaments, team of the year, and total lunker of the year categories secured within the next month or so, these will be advertised on the site when known.

Thanks to all the SSBM members that showed up to the meeting, heres to another successful SSBM season!

First Tournament - The Mersey River - Posted on June 5, 2007

SSBM's first stop on the tournament trail will take place this sunday at the Mersey River in Liverpool, Pool #4. The executive hopes for a great turnout and a smooth transition into the new tournament season. The tournament begins with the blast-off at 7am, the weigh-in will be at 2pm. To help with the rush of the first tournament, please be registered before the number draw which will be done at 6:45am. Any team not registered by then will be the last boat, holding the numbers. There will be a different number draw then previous years for safety and clarity purposes. We will start at number one and draw your weigh slip out of a bucket, and write the number on the back of the slip. This will prevent a 30-40 boat rush to get a number and to leave the beach. The banquet is scheduled to be held on October 6th at the Bridgewater Legion Hall. Hope to see you all there on Sunday! - Cody Lohnes

AGM Successful - Posted March 27, 2006

The South Shore Bassmasters Annual General Meeting was held on March 26th at the West Queens Community Centre. Turnout was lower than normal but everyone in attendance was looking forward to the upcoming 2006 season and ready to do business. Our guest speaker was Jason LeBlanc of NSDAF and he spoke of a bass nesting study they are looking to conduct.

As for changes a new rule will be used this year for weigh slips, if you come to the weigh-in with no slip you will be subject to a 4 oz (0.25 lb) penalty. We also cleared up the fog rule a little more by leaving the final call to the tournament director but in the event of fog we will most likely have a delayed start for safety reasons with the extra time, up to one hour, added to the end of the event.

Thanks to the outgoing executive for their work and good luck to the new incoming SSBM executive. The new executive consists of Leigh Weare - President, Mike Myra - Vice President, Rhonda Brannen - Treasurer, Mark Weare - Secretary, Tremayne Nauss - Tournament Director and the Social Director is currently open.  - Mark Weare

Big Mushamush Event - Posted on August 17, 2005

This past weekend the South Shore Bassmasters visited the clear waters of Big Mush-a-Mush Lake in Lunenburg Co. The race for the top going into this event was close and as a result of the Mush event there is now many teams in contention for the Team of the Year. Fishing on this day was, like always, poor for many and great for a few anglers. Many of the 12-14" fish Mush is known for were out of sight so the teams landing a lunker fish were the teams doing well on the day. Starting with 3rd place was the team of Scott & Billy Nickerson with a weight of 7.95lbs. The third place finish boosts the Nickerson team to 4th place in the TOY hunt. Placing 2nd was Rod Goodwin & Ralph Flemming with 9.32lbs. First place went to the Non-Member team of Charles Thomas & Walter Dominix with 9.68lbs and lunker with a gorilla smallmouth weighing 4.61lbs. Goodwin & Flemming received first place points as well as lunker points (3.68lb fish) to set them in third place. Still holding onto 1st place with an 11th place finish at Mush is the team of Kevin & Tyler Veinotte with 62 points. Placing 8th at Mush and tying the Veinotte team for 1st place points is Mark & Millage Weare. The race is close and the next event will surely make the standings interesting. The next event as voted by the executive is to be held at Pernette Lake in Lunenburg Co., on August 28th. -Cody Lohnes

Ten Mile Lake Report - Posted July 17, 2005

The South Shore Bassmasters second tournament was held this past Sunday on Ten Mile Lake in Queens Co. Weights here in the past have been quite consistent with usually 5lbs or more giving a top ten seat. This tournament would yield poor fishing due to the unusually darker water and hefty wind conditions with many of the field managing only 2-4lb weights. Like always, some teams figured out how to catch the nice fish and the top 3 weights proved this. In third place was the team of Norman Wentzell and Ken Minard with a weight of 6.05lbs. Settling with second and a nice bag of fish was Kevin and Bill Corkum with 6.70lbs. Solving the riddle of the day was Millage Weare and substitute Harold Weare with a 5 fish weight of 7.28lbs. They also managed an extra three points by way of the tournament lunker which was a 20.25" brute weighing 3.71lbs, the biggest caught so far this year.

The 28 points gained by Millage and Harold places the team of Mark and Millage Weare in second place in the SSBM standings with 43 points. With their second place in Ten Mile, Kevin and Bill Corkum rest at third with 38 points. Holding first place in SSBM this year so far is the team of Kevin and Tyler Veinotte who placed fourth at Ten Mile giving them an overall total of 46 points.

The next SSBM tournament is scheduled at Big Mush-a-Mush Lake on August 14th. This is SSBM's first visit to Mush-a-Mush in the summertime since 2001 - Cody Lohnes

Mersey Results Up - Posted on June 21, 2005

The 2005 SSBM Tournament Trail kicked off this past weekend at the re-vamped Mersey River system. The anglers on Sunday had nice weather with brisk winds at times to diminish the June blackflies present. 35 teams launched their rigs into the Mersey by way of the new successful launching area. The fishing, however, was only successful for a few teams on this day as only 13 teams managed a 5 fish limit. The top 5 teams solving the settled Mersey fish started with the one person team of Vinal Smith with a weight of 5.91lbs in fifth place. Taking fourth place was the non-member team of Shawn Sears and Steven Swim with an exceptional 6.49lb bag as well as the lunker pool for the day with a 19.5 inch, 2.81lb smallmouth. In 3rd place is the always consistent team of Tremayne Nauss and Jerome Croft with 7.29lbs. Kevin and Tyler Veinotte from Veinotte's Gone Fishin' in Bridgewater grabbed the 2nd place trophies and cheque with a nice bag of fish tipping the scales at 7.45lbs. Solving the fish over all other teams on this day was Leigh Weare and Jamie Campbell with an impressive 8.56lb bag. This 1st place finish gives the team 25 points and the first overall in the SSBM standings to start the 2005 season. The stakes are high this year with new members joining the club and a very well attended first tournament. SSBM's next event is held at Ten Mile Lake in Queens Co. on July 17th. -Cody Lohnes

2005 AGM Yields New Executive - Posted on March 14th

The South Shore Bassmasters met at the Italy Cross Fire Hall on Sunday for their annual AGM meeting. This years meeting ended in some position changes for the SSBM executive. The only position held by the same person is the Tournament Director which is once again Tremayne Nauss, I'm sure the club is glad to see Tremayne hold onto that position. The new Social Director is Gail Lavender, Treasurer is Rhonda Brannen and the Secretary is now held by Dennis Lavender. Vice-President was voted on and accepted by Roland Brannen for the upcoming season and the 2005 SSBM President is Angela Kendrick. The AGM also had a couple new rule changes, one is a rule by which the official tournament time must be announced at the start of every tournament so everyone is on the same page starting out. Another aspect that was discussed and I am personally excited about is the possibility of a new website. The new website would give SSBM their own domain(ie. '.com), as well as more bandwidth and storage for easier and more viewing of pictures and other files. As well it would cut out the frequent ad pop-ups that I'm sure many are aware of.

That is all for now folks, SSBM's first tournament will be held on the rejuvenated Mersey River Pool#4 on June 19th from 7am to 2pm. Hope to see everyone their.

Cody Lohnes
